Poetry Friday: The Visitor

August 11th, 2006 (08:00 am)
peaceful

Current Mood: peaceful
Current Song: Hear You Me by Jimmy Eat World

Down the hill, in the field of sweet alfalfa, they're
        freezing each other, the children

playing tag and I'm up at the house, I’m
in the picture window, thin
and distant like the glimpse

of a surfacing fish. What dark waters
the house is, behind me, settling
into evening. Dusk

and there are, of course, fireflies. Tell me,
what was your name? When you visited once,

by the backroad where the stones glowed pale
in the moonlight, I was too young, I still thought
I belonged to the world. But now

quartered in this house, watching the neighbors' children
turn to dusk, I feel
I'm ready. Come back

and bring your finest wine, the oldest bottle.
Bring that strange dusty book you were reading.

Isn't it? I thought it was fitting for recent discussions with my recent visitor - except for the wine part - and especially for the fireflies/Firefly.

I don't think I've read anything by her. It reminds me somehow of "This Is a Photograph of Me" by Margaret Atwood.

I hadn't heard of her until this morning!

I still need to read Atwood.

I haven't read anything by Atwood other than the novel The Edible Woman (which wasn't fantastic but wasn't bad) and that poem.

Thank you for poetry Friday. I've gone on record as "f**king hating poetry" but that is simply not true. Words can be as pretty as notes.

Hurrah! You ought to post poems on Friday as well. I didn't start Poetry Friday. I believe Liz did - http://yzocaet.blogspot.com/ - and Kelly promotes it often - http://www.kidslitinformation.blogspot.com/ - I like to encourage others to play along.
