Poetry Friday: A Midsummer Night's Dream

awake

Current Mood: awake
Current Song: Made of Gold by Jonatha Brooke

And we fairies, that do run
By the triple Hecate's team,
From the presence of the sun
Following darkness like a dream,
Now are frolic; not a mouse
Shall disturb this hallow'd house:
I am sent with broom before,
To sweep the dust behind the door.
- from A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare

Break a leg, Emily!

Wow, you picked my favorite lines of Shakespeare.

And you've been rounded up! Thanks!

Thanks! Awesome lines! On "frolic" the fairies throw the colored-light eggs in the air. On "blessed be" they're swept in a circle and then turned off. All in total darkness except for a light on Puck. One of my favorite images.

I GO, I GO, SWIFTER THAN... tonight. :) I am SO getting pictures.

You are welcome!

Do you then catch the lights or let them drop? If so, do the egg lights bounce? Curiouser and curiouser . . .

YAY YOU!

Catch them. During most of Puck's speech (I start on "glide" and others at other points) we slowly move the lights around, observe and use them like cool tricks or treasures. By the time Oberon is talking about briar, we are all lying on the bed with the eggs sitting in front of us, in a nest of sorts, and we're looking at them. Then, with "each fairy stray," we pick them back up and swish elsewhere until "blessed be." The only other time the lights are used is when all the lovers go to sleep and there's a blackout, during which they get under the covers, rearrange, switch positions, etc. During that blackout, I cross the stage and walk around the bed while holding and playing with an egg, then turn it off, at which point the light comes on on top of the bower (up behind the headboard), where the scene with Titania and Bottom takes place. I'm the last fairy Bottom calls up, so that gives me a few seconds to get to the ladder and prepare to enter. It's cool.
