The Cybils: 2006 YA Hall of Fame

January 1st, 2007 (05:44 am)
thirsty

Current Mood: thirsty
Current Song: The Twilight Zone theme song

As I stated earlier, it was difficult to select five very lucky finalists from the pool of eighty nominated works of Young Adult fiction. In order to showcase and honor some of our favorite characters, we on the nominating committee thought it would be fun to create a Hall of Fame -- something you might see in the yearbook of one of the contemporary characters. (Some schools call this Senior Superlatives.) We went a little crazy with this, as you'll see . . .

Valedictorian
Colin from An Abundance of Katherines by John Green

Most Likely to Win a Grammy
Ali from Adios to My Old Life by Caridad Ferrer (pop/rock)
Liz Scattergood from Blind Faith (classical)

Most Likely to Kick Butt (Literally)
The Gallagher Girls from I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You by Ally Carter
Halfdan Strongbow from Viking Warrior

Drama Queen (and Most Fashionable)
Ashleigh from Enthusiasm by Polly Shulman

Homecoming Queen
D.J. from Dairy Queen

Prom King & Queen
Nick & Norah from Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan

Cutest Couple
Rachel and Howard from Goy Crazy by Melissa Schorr

Most Haunting
Death from The Book Thief
Fate from Just in Case

Most Artistic
Betsy from The Pursuit of Happiness
Fanboy from The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl

Super Sidekicks
Hassan from An Abundance of Katherines
Rudy from The Book Thief

Most Likely to Succeed
Leo Caraway from Born to Rock

Captains Courageous
Matthew from The Rules of Survival
Lakshmi from Sold

Most Popular
Morgan Carter from More Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet

Most Ambitious
Meg from A True and Faithful Narrative
Hattie from Hattie Big Sky

Class Bookworm
Liesl from The Book Thief
Cordelia from This is All

Top Mathlete and Stereotype Slammer
Patty from Nothing but the Truth (and a few white lies)
(Thanks to Tanita for the better second title!)

Most Valuable Players
Bo Marsten from Rash
Toyo Shimada from Samurai Shortstop

Best Dancer at Parties
Estrella Alvarez from Estrella's Quinceanera

Amateur Sleuths
Jessica Ortiz from Hollywood Sisters: Backstage Pass
Jasmine from Bad Kitty

CSI-in-Training
Cameryn from The Christopher Killer

Future Therapist (or always in therapy)
Ruby from The Boy Book

Girl Next Door
Alice McKinley from Alice in the Know

Boy Next Door
Nathan from Blind Faith

Hippest D.J.
Owen from Just Listen

I could go on for days, but I'll be quiet now.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Gracias! As I just posted to Carrie, I'm flattered that authors are checking it out - and that you all don't think that Jac and I went total nuts on this.

Well, you know I LOVE it! I was mildly bummed at not finaling, although with so many great books nominated, I would've been in jaw-dropping shock if I had finaled.

But Ali as Most Likely to Win a Grammy? TOO COOL! Y'all did a GREAT job-- bravo!

I think I can safely say that everyone on the panel enjoyed the book, and you know how glad I was to see it nominated!

This is so fun!

Finally had some time to check out your list. I love it! I adored Hassan as a sidekick. And the nice thing about this list is, more of the oh so wonderful books have a chance to get attention. Personally, I think that it would be great if you went on for days. But I'll allow that you might have other things to do in your life.
