Classic Characters Grow Up
Recently, Micol Ostow and I discussed Law & Order shows. During the Criminal Intent portion of our conversation, we agreed that the character of Detective Robert (Bobby) Goren is brilliant. She related him to "a grown up, super-steroids version of Encyclopedia Brown."

This made me wonder three things:
1) What characters grew up and became . . . other characters?
2) If Goren is Encyclopedia Brown, is Detective Alexandra (Alex) Eames Sally Kimball?
3) Was I the only person who watched the short-lived Encyclopedia Brown television series in 1989?

Book bloggers and avid readers, feel free to answer the first question. Be funny, be serious, be creative!

Oz and Ends and Fuse #8 are also discussing Encyclopedia Brown.

OMG I am so NOT embarrassed by my Criminal Intent love! Feel free to quote me directly.

As for your question, I know this is sort of cliched, but I think Georgia Nicholson grows up to be Bridget Jones. IMHO.

I can see Georgia as Bridget.

Have you read the Alice MacLeod books by Susan Juby? They are in the same realm as Georgia, but Canadian instead of British.

No. I remember that show and loved it. :)

this is HARD!

Hmm. The vampire-boyfriend guy in Twilight (can't remember his name) could grow up to be Angel... they're both bloodsuckers, and they're both... a bit wet.

... and on the vampire thing, I suppose Moz could grow up to be Spike, if he stayed vampy. Rock and roll, plus easily seduced by strong women...

Now I'm trying to figure out which YA character could grow up to be House... Christopher from Curious Incident is too obvious, and also too nice...

Oh, oh, I would love to see or read a young House. BRING IT. In the meantime, can I get House (or perhaps Cameron) to read the BODY OF EVIDENCE book series by Christopher Golden and Rick Hautala?

You too, Lili, if you haven't already. Start with BODY BAGS. That is the first of ten contemporary mysteries. Positively fantastic.

As per Edward, I possibly prefer him to Angel.

I wasn't a big Buffy/Angel fan, nor a Buffy/Spike fan. However, I "ship" no one and nothing, and I know I'm in the minority there, because most people do like SOME relationship pairing of SOME kind.)

I don't know if we get the Body of Evidence books over here in the Antipodes... I'll check.

I'm not a big Angel/anyone fan, and only liked Spike before he got Wet (and skinny and scary-looking).

I think a young House would be depressing. Because ONCE he must have been a nice kid. And then it All Went Horrible Wrong.

If you can't get them from a store or BookSense.com then beg for them at the library. I also recommend reading them in order, because though each book has a different murder/crime/serial killer, the books do follow main character Jenna Blake's life - and you're going to love Jenna. She's intelligent, quick-thinking, resourceful, and strong.

I just had a quick flash of teen Giles and teen House hanging out. Oh, yes.

I think Sport grows up to be Xander.

I think Lucy Van Pelt grows up to be Lisa Cuddy.

Oh, Xander, I miss thee.

I want Xander to meet Parker from The Bermudez Triangle. Xander needs a guy friend. So does Parker. They have similar funny bones. For example, while working at a TGI Friday's type of place, Parker sings a song called Spoony McForkenknife to cheer up a friend. It's fantastic.

Lucy -> Lisa could work. Though Eliza playing the faux Lucy on stage changes the role a bit.

yes, unfortunately

Detective Ames is like a grown-up Sally Kimball, which pretty much captures why CI is my least favorite Law and Order series. I can't stand the smurfette passivity of Ames, always setting things up for Goren's brilliance to shine through. Actually, I think both Encyclopedia and Sally would have developed more complex gender identities as adults than those of Ames/Goren.

How about this one: Barbara Walters as a very grown-up Pigeon who wants to drive the bus.
