Poetry Friday: There Once Was a Young Lady Called Bright

September 28th, 2007 (05:12 am)
awake

Current Mood: awake
Current Song: Without a Trace theme song

There once was a young lady called Bright
Who could travel far faster than light
She set off one way,
In a relative way,
And returned home the previous night.

I first came across this limerick in the novel Time Travel in Einstein's Universe by J. Richard Gott.

That's my all time favorite limerick!!
:D
My version was slightly different, but not meaningfully so.
Any idea what the source is on this one?

Universe attributed it to A. H. R. Buller.

Cool!
I'm not sure where I first heard it... I was still in elementary school, but beyond that, can't map it. I'll have to follow it up somehow!

Hah! Wish I could go backwards or forwards that quickly. I think I'd manage to make it night for a little longer, and spend more time with my bed... bet you're pretty bushed, too!

Re: TadMack says:

I love the concept of time travel. Bring it ON.

How's life abroad?

Cloudscome:

I really wish I could learn this trick for the fund raiser cocktail party I must attend tonight! I'm just not a cocktail type of a girl...

Loved this! Hadn't seen it before, and I liked how it surprised and delighted me. Thanks for sharing.

Hrm...

Is that the book with all sorts of short stories about time?
One of them has people building so far up that time goes by at a different rate for them than people down at the surface of the earth...
Now I need to go find that book... I knew I should never have quit the bookstore job...
*g*
