Poetry Friday: O Captain! My Captain! by Walt Whitman

Current Mood: awake
Current Song: Weak With Love by Susanna Hoffs

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring.

- the start of O Captain! My Captain! by Walt Whitman

My first thought upon reading this was also of Dead Poets Society. :) I don't think I've ever read the full poem. Thank you for sharing.

TadMack says:

Dead Poets Society was the first movie I ever saw. In college, unfortunately, I took a lit and film criticism course - I cannot now watch it without seeing all of the little holes in the plot... BUT! the great poetry (and literature) in it endures, of which this poem is one. It's in the great tradition of ballads and story-songs, you can see it all happening. Very cool.

Look at all of these DPS comments. Wow.

If any of you are wondering, I associate the poem with a song.
