Poetry Friday: The Grammar Lesson by Steve Kowit
In honor of National Grammar Day, which was March 4th:

A noun's a thing. A verb's the thing it does.
An adjective is what describes the noun.
In "The can of beets is filled with purple fuzz"

of and with are prepositions. The's
an article, a can's a noun,
a noun's a thing. A verb's the thing it does.

I could have used this one teaching English! Of course, during every grammar test everyone would be muttering, "The noun's the thing... the verb's the thing it does... which really wouldn't be that bad!

Cute poem, but I'm not so sure it would help my fifth graders learn their grammar rules. Might make them even more confused, which is really hard to imagine because they seem to equate parts of speech with deciphering an ancient Middle Eastern script. I'm definitely going to give it a try however, along with my favorite teaching tool: the School House Rock videos. :) KYM

I just can't stop thinking about that can of purple fizz now. Why is it fizzy? What happens if we drink it?

I like that you're squeeing over grammar. Woo!

I am squeeing over the form of the poem, actually, but I love the wit and humor in it and his decision to "teach" grammar rules inside the form.

Purple is my favorite color, and beets I like just fine, but if the beets are fuzzy, I might pass on them . . .
