Booklist: Communities

Current Mood: awake
Current Song: The Trouble with Angels score music

A librarian asked for books appropriate for middle school that detail and consider various kinds of communities. I recommended the following titles:

That Girl Lucy Moon by Amy Timberlake
The Creek by Jennifer L. Holm
Evolution, Me & Other Freaks of Nature by Robin Brande
The Patron Saint of Butterflies by Cecilia Galante
Leaving Fishers by Margaret Peterson Haddix

For older kids: What Happened to Lani Garver by Carol Plum-Ucci

For younger kids: The Dancing Cats of Applesap by Janet Taylor Lisle

All of these books with inspire thoughtful conversations about what makes (or breaks) a community. Each book has a definite community with its own sense and sensibilities, and some more sensitive or shocking than others. For example, Evolution, Patron, and Leaving Fishers all deal with religion and belief systems, while Lucy Moon promotes activism. Meanwhile, Applesap is pure fun. I must have read that book twenty times as a kid.

The Creek

I've just started reading The Patron Saint of Butterflies. And was anyone else as surprised as I at the conclusion of The Creek? I mean, honestly, whhhaaaaattt?

I haven't read What Happened to Lani Garver, but Carol Plum-Ucci pretty much exceeds awesome on most levels. Thanks for this list :)

Re: The Creek

I really, really enjoyed The Creek. I tell people the premise, then nudge them to read it if they want to find out what happens.

You are welcome! Thank you for the feedback.
