We Grow Accustomed to the Dark by Emily Dickinson

January 28th, 2011 (07:16 am)
thoughtful

Current Mood: thoughtful
Current Song: When in Rome by Nickel Creek

We grow accustomed to the Dark --
When light is put away --
As when the Neighbor holds the Lamp
To witness her Goodbye --

A Moment -- We uncertain step
For newness of the night --
Then -- fit our Vision to the Dark --
And meet the Road -- erect --

And so of larger -- Darkness --
Those Evenings of the Brain --
When not a Moon disclose a sign --
Or Star -- come out -- within --

The Bravest -- grope a little --
And sometimes hit a Tree
Directly in the Forehead --
But as they learn to see --

Either the Darkness alters --
Or something in the sight
Adjusts itself to Midnight --
And Life steps almost straight.

LOVE that one. Again, I wonder, as always, WHY must we all read the same Dickinson poems in school when there are so many more of them that are much more interesting and nuanced? Oh, well -- it's great to find them now - better late than never!

Last Friday, I couldn't decide between this one or that which I used last week, so I decided to go for two in a row. :)

This poem made me cry. I've got to come back and read it again. And maybe again dry eyed. Thanks for your Emily Dickinson sharings -- amazing, really, how much is new to me.

To be moved is lovely - but I didn't mean to make you cry! :)

I tried to read the poem, but it was too dark. :-)
