Booklist: Tough Issues for Teens
One afternoon in the bookstore, a young woman in her late teens approached me and said, "Excuse me. Can you help me? I want some books like . . . " She named a few teen fiction titles that dealt with drug abuse and anorexia. She looked slightly uncomfortable but mostly excited. I told her that I could recommend many good books. Within minutes, she was sitting on the floor in the teen fiction section, a plastic basket full to the brim with books, with additional titles in her hand and next to her knees and her feet.

We had a great discussion. I was happy on any levels: happy that she felt comfortable enough to come to me, happy that she was open-minded, happy that I got some realistic, well-written books in her hand. This urged me to make a list of books dealing tough issues - eating disorders, loss and grieving, addiction, abuse, and so forth.

Due to their subject matter, the majority of these books are recommended for older teenagers as well as adults - be they parents, teachers, librarians, or simply avid readers.

I've read every title on this list, and have given each book a rating according to the United States movie rating guide - G, PG, PG-13, or R - based on content, and a number of stars - four being the best - based on quality (my personal opinion).

I hope that this list helps readers of all ages find books they may be too shy to openly discuss with a bookseller or librarian. I want those readers to know they may leave a comment here and tell me which books they have found valuable. Most of all, I want them to know they can talk to their friends or adults they know in order to get the answers and help they may need.

If you would like for me to add more titles about a certain subject, or if you want more information about any of the books on the list, please leave a comment.

Special thanks to those who have shown their support of this list by offering me links, comments, and compliments, such as Jen Robinson, Bookseller Chick, Robin Brande, and Sassymonkey at BlogHer.

Another good one on physical disorders is Stoner and Spaz by Ron Koertge.

And the two Chris Crutcher books I've read have all dealt with emotional/physical abuse and physical disorders/deformities, and from what I understand, those are recurring themes in all of his books.

Saw this on friendsfriends: On parental abuse, another good one is Freaky Green Eyes, by Joyce Carol Oates. Also, on peer harrassment/isoloation from peers, Big Mouth and Ugly Girl, also by JCO is fantastic.

This list reminds me of the Lurlene McDaniel books I read over a decade ago. They all dealt with teenagers who were terminally ill, or at least potentially terminally ill. Are her books still popular these days?

Francesca Lia Block's The Hanged Man is about anorexia. Pretty dark stuff, but beautiful and incredibly poignant nonetheless.

I know you didn't include a list of books on drugs, but I love Melvin Burgess' Junk (or Smack, as it was published in the US) is one of my absolute favourite books. I read for the first time when I was 14 and loved it, and I've read it every year or so since and I love it more with each re-reading.

OK, I have a question. I see your list of book regarding date rape/abuse. These are fiction. For fun and practice, I've been writing an original TV series and in which one of the main characters is dealing with date rape issues. She wasn't legally raped as she never said no, but she only didn't because she was afraid of waht would happen if she did and now she feels like she was raped, but is added to that the self anger of knowing she didn't do anything to stop it. Long lead in to the question. Due to one of her friends going through a similar deal, but fighting the guy off successfully, she ends up confiding this in her and the friends' dad. In a later ep he buys her a book to read to help her deal with her issues. Do you know of a non-fiction book that would fit this, or should I just make one up. The character was 15 at the time and is 16 at the time she gets the book.

Oddly, as dark as this all is, you might actually like the series as the four girls the show revolves around are good people who are outcasts and are fine with that. There are repercussions for when people mess up.

And tying it in to another post earlier (I just scrolled the whole weekend) the friend the girl confides in's dad talks about the movie Thirteen and how it freaked him out (his daughter is 14) and should be filed under horror. Yet he's now thinking of showing it to her with the note: "See this? Don't do this."

Ok Im sorry, really not on the subject, but Teach Me is totally on my bookshelf. Amazing book. Another one I would reommend would be Pure by Rebecca Ray, that book, oy, the ending everytime I read it gives me shivers. The girl was 16 when she wrote it. I was amazed to say the least.

Awesome list! Wasted by Maya Hornbacher (sp?) is a beautiful memoir about anorexia. Also, Saving Francesca by Marschetta (sp?) is a great book about mother's mental illness. My novel Storky deals with step-parents. The wonderful You Don't Know Me by David Klass deals with parental loss and abuse by a parent, though technically a step-parent.

Another book about anorexia, while dated, is "The Best Little Girl in the World"..it was written back in the early 80's and i read it a few times. it was amazing! i don't know who the writer is, but to still remember it now has to account for something...

Anything on academic pressures or starting-off-college stories? (It's tricky finding YA titles that deal with college, very often 'college stories' are seen as adult fiction material only.)

This is a fantastic list; I'm printing it out right now for reference.

I just got Side Effects by Amy Goldman Koss in from Junior Library Guild on Monday and ended up spending half the afternoon reading it when I should have been working. It's a definite "should add" to the "protagonist with an illness" section.

rehab books for teens?
[info]simmone
2007-01-05 06:24 am UTC (link)
hi,
a friend of mine who works in rehabilitiation was asking me about YA books for a patient of hers a 14 year old boy who is paraplegic - does anyone know of any books that deal in injury through accident? The only book I could think of was Joni by Joni Earickson - but I was hoping for something which didn't have a 'finding god' element ... or Dear Miffy by John Marsden - but that's pretty bleak - something in the middle would be good ...
hope you can help ...
great list by the way - thankyou!

Sexual Abuse?
[info]snapshotjen
2007-01-07 08:43 pm UTC (link)
Other than date rape, what about sexual abuse (from family or non-family)? A friend of mine has foster daughters who have often faced these issues, and she tries to relate with them.

There are two new novels, in the adult market, but in the first the protagonist/victim is about 10, I think, and in the second she's 17, and written from her POV, so they are very readable by a teen audience. I would give them a PG (or maybe PG-13, because of subject matter but it's not explicit) and a 3 or 4 * rating for quality.

They are both by Mary Demuth. One is called Watching the Tree Limbs and the other is Wishing on Dandelions. They are "faith based," but only because the girl explores her faith, not in a preachy way.

This is a great compilation, Little Willow! I get a lot of requests for issue books at work - I may have to print this out.

I just read a really good one that deals with mental illness (amnesia for one character, depression for another) - Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin. I really liked it - you might too!

Parental Abuse Book
(Anonymous)
2007-07-13 03:51 pm UTC (link)
Little Willow, this is a great list to provide! I had read it previously, but only just now realized I could make a suggestion.
The third book in my series deals with a character trying to overcome parental abuse. (You currently have my fourth book in your reading stack!) "James: The Circle of Friends, Book III" is suited for both male & female readers and would be PG-13. A description can be found here at my website: http://www.thecircleoffriends.net/id3.html I am also a foster parent and have seen many abuse stories.
Thank you very much! I really love this site!
