Poetry Friday: I Want to Write Something So Simply by Mary Oliver

January 3rd, 2014 (07:00 am)

Current Mood: excited
Current Song: Suspicion score music

I want to write something
so simply
about love
or about pain
that even
as you are reading
you feel it
and as you read
you keep feeling it
and though it be my story
it will be common,
though it be singular
it will be known to you
so that by the end
you will think -
no, you will realize -
that it was all the while
yourself arranging the words,
that it was all the time
words that you yourself,
out of your heart
had been saying.

- I Want to Write Something So Simply by Mary Oliver

Many thanks to Courtney Sheinmel for bringing this poem to my attention.

I've posted poems by Mary Oliver here before, such as The Uses of Sorrow and Starlings in Winter.

Mary Oliver

Mary Oliver is amazing at how she can wrap us up in her words so tight you think they are your own. Loved this.
Have you read "Swan, Poems and Prose" by Mary Oliver? It is my favorite.

Re: Mary Oliver

Thank you for the recommendation! I have read some of her poetry, but have yet to check out a full collection.
