Poetry Friday: Screech Owl by Ted Kooser

November 10th, 2017 (06:00 am)
awake

Current Mood: awake
Current Song: One Day Like This by Elbow

All night each reedy whinny
From a bird no bigger than a heart
Flies out of a tall black pine
And, in a breath, is taken away
By the stars. Yet, with small hope
From the center of darkness
It calls out again and again.

Hadn't seen this one before, LW. So evocative! Thank you. :)

It's also a nice variation on Emily's idea: Hope is the thing with feathers 🦉

I was just going to say I connected with Emily D's poem, too. Ted Kooser shows us the good things to remember. Thanks for this!

hope

Hope was the first thing I thought of when I read this today. Thank you for sharing it with a world in need of hope.

Have you ever heard a screech owl in the wild? Kooser perfectly describes its call as a "whinny." It's been awhile since we've had any in our neighborhood. I hope they come back.
