Poetry Friday: A Letter in October by Ted Kooser

November 24th, 2017 (06:00 am)
sleepy

Current Mood: sleepy
Current Song: One Day Like This by Elbow

Dawn comes later and later now,
and I, who only a month ago
could sit with coffee every morning
watching the light walk down the hill
to the edge of the pond and place
a doe there, shyly drinking,

then see the light step out upon
the water, sowing reflections
to either side - a garden
of trees that grew as if by magic -
now see no more than my face,
mirrored by darkness, pale and odd,

startled by time. While I slept,
night in its thick winter jacket
bridled the doe with a twist
of wet leaves and led her away,
then brought its black horse with harness
that creaked like a cricket, and turned

the water garden under. I woke,
and at the waiting window found
the curtains open to my open face;
beyond me, darkness. And I,
who only wished to keep looking out,
must now keep looking in.

(It's a shame I didn't find this last month, isn't it?)

Yes, it would have been a good poem for October, but it is the PERFECT poem for post-time change.

I've heard plenty of crickets singing their songs lately!

Kooser

Kooser makes us think again of how something 'is'. I don't like the dark at 5, but there is a pause in our lives that is different in winter. "night in its thick winter jacket" is a line I'll remember! Thanks!

Re: Kooser

I wish we had a bit more daylight, too!

October

It's still a lovely poem for the end of November. I like the peacefulness in this one.

Re: October

Peacefulness should be cherished!

I think it closes perfectly,
" And I,
who only wished to keep looking out,
must now keep looking in."
I appreciate the reflective time–I think the darkness makes us appreciate the light that much more, thanks!

Reflection and contemplation are important.
