Poetry Friday: With Thanks to the Field Sparrow Whose Voice is So Delicate and Humble by Mary Oliver

November 23rd, 2018 (06:00 am)
thankful

Current Mood: thankful
Current Song: Slow Burn by Jillian Edwards

I do not live happily or comfortably
With the cleverness of our times.
The talk is all about computers,
The news is all about bombs and blood.
This morning, in the fresh field,
I came upon a hidden nest.
It held four warm, speckled eggs.
I touched them.
Then went away softly,
Having felt something more wonderful
Than all the electricity of New York City.

This is one of my all-time favorite Mary Oliver poems. Thanks for sharing. It's a beautiful reminder of the powerful wonders in our world.

This poem reminds me of my grandparents' house. We would look for nests in the hedges -- not to touch, just to catch a glimpse.
